Thinking from another angle, another idea is that you use a SIP provider, I can highly recommend https://jmp.chat then you can use the same phone on any computer or mobile device, they will ring everywhere! But you would then need to change out the dialer app as the default one included doesn’t have the ability to add a SIP account. For messages, any xmpp capable messaging app will do (jmp.chat has some recommendations on that front).
Away from home I would still need data, correct? And data needs cell towers
Update: I tried VirtualBox and Win10 in it. No good. Trying to get a bootable usb made of win10 32bit for my old Vostro laptop. Will see if I can find another method to make the usb in Linux, I’ve tried 3, no go. As you know, LInux and Win don’t play well together.
If I can’t get it accomplished to even try the IMEI switch, I will probably keep mine, but return hubby’s (it’s unopened). There are things that work for me so much better in the Brax3. A PDF I read from everyday enlarges so easily (bad retinas) just but rotating, not sure if that is a function of the Brax or iode, but it’s awesome. Are you an iode dev? Do you know if it is the OS?
I’m not giving up yet though, because if I keep the Brax as a tablet I will still need to carry another phone
Well wifi and cellular data both work for the sip, but yes you need network of some sorts.
I use Ventoy to make multi-boot USB devices (I just used it to install W10 using the same USB I install Linux distros with).
Ventoy is what I tried last night. Didn’t work. Do you know, is there something in BIOS I need to change for that to work? At any rate, I will try again.
It didn’t work to install Ventoy, or Ventoy USB stick wasn’t detected? It should be secure boot compatible but when you create your Ventoy stick you may need to make sure of the settings
In BIOS you can also disable Secure Boot
if possible, it isn’t really that secure anyway since MS had their secure keys compromised
Ventoy installed on the usb ok, and I copied the iso as instructed, but it doesn’t boot from it. I tried ‘normal boot’, I will try ‘wimboot’ now.
So you did this when installing Ventoy to the USB? Menu Option-->Secure Boot Support
for Ventoy2Disk.exe and -s
option for Ventoy2Disk.sh
That configures the USB to support secure boot…
Ok, the ‘wimboot’ option worked. It it installing now. We’ll see how it goes, it is an old 32 bit machine, but I was able to download a Win32 bit.Wish me luck with the rest.
Did not work. The drive was Ext4 since I had Linux on it, so it would not install on that, I accidentally deleted the partition, ran a 32 bit Linux Lite live cd, formatted the partition to NTFS, but it still will not install. This PC originally had WinXP, anyone know where I could find a 32bit ISO of that to try installing??? I’m serious.
TL;DR for others: @Ricmar was successful in re-flashing their IMEI numbers using recycled ones from an older device they had. They are now using the brax3
on US Mobile’s Verizon
network (they call it “Warp”).
I was successful flashing my pixel IMEI to my BraX3. HOWEVER, the next step is to flash iodeOS & while the IMEI’s remained as I set them, the BraX3 will NOT connect to Verizon while running iode.
Am I disappointed, YES, I liked iodeOS. While Brax3 could read the sim card (it knew the phone number, and that it was Verizon), it never did connect. After changing the IMEI it still doesn’t connect.
My solution: One of the steps is to first flash LunarOS, after doing that I tested my sim card…put it in…and it just worked…no setup…nothing else. Made a call & sent a text…using the US Mobile Warp (Verizon) network. I decided to flash Lunar back on it, and it is now set up as I like. I have made several calls and texts are coming through.
If you have been reading any of this and the attached links, you know this was not simple to do.Getting the necessary programs running was the hard part, due to missing required files on both Linux and Windows laptops.
NOTE: I had a LOT of help from people on this Community site. I couldn’t have done it without them.
I am still very surprised by this, that the same IMEI for Lunar is working on the cellular network but not on iodéOS. Not arguing with your experience, it just is surprising. I do have a Verizon Warp SIM, I may follow the process but I need to find an IMEI I am willing to sacrifice from an old phone first (and that phone needs to be able to be 5G capable or else I think it would also be blocked).
If others beat me to it I would be very interested if this (working in Lunar not in iodéOS is reproducible).
Hmm, is there something in iode that is different in Lunar? I just checked because I noticed it when setting up, Lunar doesn’t give an option for 5G. I don’t really care since we never use it, always set my phones to use LTE (4G). This has 4G and 2G as options. It is set to 4G. Normally where we are it fluctuates between 2-3 bars. I’ve noticed I sometimes have 4 bars now.
Sorry regarding stealing an old phone’s IMEI number, I just meant if the donor phone is too old it will be blacklisted from the network, it is common for carriers to block old devices even though they are still usable. So my old flip phone’s imei won’t be any good for this job (this doesn’t have 4G capability, so is a bad example). 4G (not 5G yet but probably some day) is necessary for functionality as you note, but I believe there are some 4G capable phones that are already blacklisted from USA cellular networks.
UPDATE: hey I just found that often IMEI are printed on the SIM tray. I have a broken Pixel 3a XL (won’t power on), that sounds like a perfect donor to me
I figured I own the pixel6 and the brax3. So the IMEI is mine.
Update: I thought of something else that is different between the 2 OS’s…Lunar is on Android 14, iode is on Android 15, possible difference in one working with Vzn and the other not???
I actually really like Lunar. (Sorry Rik!!) The interface is beautiful and the icon shape refreshing
I have not rooted to get rid of the ‘userdebug’ watermark. I am hoping to have some input from devs when ‘project open source’ is posted - per Rob, since there are a couple of other notifications that research tells me I can ignore, but it would be nice to confirm.
Loving my Brax3!!
Another data point confirming works with lunar not with iodeos. This was my experience a few months back, brax3 sees the verizon network with lunar, not with iodeos. I have not been able to make calls though, only sms.
How is it going? Were you able to reproduce what happened?
Opened hubby’s BraX3, Warp sim does not work on iode out of the box (which I expected).
I am ready to prepare his BraX3, by flashing Lunar then the IMEI - I had 2 IMEI’s on my Pix6a, he has only 1 on his PIx6 - is it because I used e-sim on mine once to try another network? There is only 1 sim slot in Pixel. Will BraX3 function if I only input 1 IMEI?
I went ahead with just the one IMEI on hubby’s BraX3. Lunar is up & running, connected to Vzn. He’s happy.
