Heliboard keyboard tips

Coming from a old workhorse of a LG phone I kept finding I did a LOT MORE typos with the Heliboard keyboard. I kept trying to find out what the big difference was. I tried increasing the size of the buttons which helped but I still had issues. Eventually I found turning on the key boarders has got me back to about the same level I was before on my old phone. I thought I would mention it if others are having issues coming from similar keyboards.

The settings:

The > top of keyboard, then hit the settings cog
Appearance: Turn on key boarders
In prefs:
Key size 100% up
Number row checked (I really use the number row a lot and surprised this isn’t on by default)

Moving from iOS, I found this useful but your text was a lil’ hard to follow. Below is somewhat clearer for my future self:

Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen Keyboard > HeliBoard

  1. Enable Key Borders

    • Go to: Heliboard Settings > Appearance > Key borders → Turn on
    • Improves visual separation between keys, reducing mis-taps.
  2. Increase Key Size

    • Go to: Preferences > Key size → Set to 100% or higher
    • Larger keys improve touch accuracy.
  3. Enable Number Row

    • Go to: Preferences > Show number row → Check on
    • Useful for frequent numeric input; not enabled by default.

And you’re right… having the numbers rows makes it super cool. I also added an emoji key. Now, it’s more like iOS and more useful!

Thank you.

Ah sorry about that. I usually get told I am too verbose, and this time I am the opposite lol. Also my instructions were for using the in-app settings rather than the Brax3 main settings. Either work the same of course, the only difference is getting there (and added to the confusion). I find using the > at the top left of the keyboard, then hitting the cog icon quicker than going through the main settings.

No, you’re good. I was just recording what I did for myself in case I forget down the line (or might help someone else too)

Good tips both of you!

I went through similar trials myself to get the best out of Heliboard and came to similar results. I’m ex-iOS too.

One caveat on number row is this makes keyboard a lot taller - so can obscure a lot more screen real estate and get in the way on certain screens and webpages (e.g. login screens). So ultimately I reverted to disabling it…

Another suggestion is change the bottom padding scale to say 191% (Settings/System/ Keyboard/On-screen Keyboard/HeliBoard/appearance/bottom padding scale. The reason I did this is I kept hitting the home button a lot when going for the space bar. This seemed to fix the issue (at least for me).

As for the number row taking up too much screen space, I suspect this is why the developers have it off by default. But in my case I use it so much it is worth it, and I haven’t run into any issues using websites with it. BUT I did when I needed to enter numbers on such websites (which happens a lot for me) and was a real pain swaping the layout ALL THE TIME.

But you know, you CAN have the number row and not take up any extra screen space… turn off the toolbar. Settings/System/ Keyboard/On-screen Keyboard/HeliBoard/toolbar/mode/hidden and now you can have the number bar on without taking any extra screen space.

I assume you are running the old style menu bar at bottom of the screen? I know some people still like this but suspect its a minority. So only really relevant for that use case.

If using modern swipe gestures (majority of people?) its not necessary as the keyboard space bar row is the bottom of the screen. There is nothing underneath to tap by accident.

Curiously enough I actually use the toolbar a fair bit, having customised it, so its a bit of six of one, half a dozen of the other, for which to remove to reduce height… But for me its the number row.

Me too!

I am always using the number keys often enough that I get tired having to hit that shift button. It’s better it’s on by default since that tends to be the majority of cases.

It’s somewhat similar to a physical keyboard… I can’t have a physical keyboard without that number keypad on the right because it’s more convenient and don’t need to look at what I am hitting.

Yes, there are number keys on top but I find myself using numbers often that “screw space” :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

There is also that “v” symbol at the bottom to minimize the keyboard if I need to see what’s being covered. Took me a while to figure that out.

Anyway, I am glad I have the option to customize.
