How do I get apps from GitHub?

Hopefully this will help me and others who aren’t as saavy.

There’s plenty of useful suggestions given for apps to help us get the most from our phones and many times they’re links to GitHub.

I’ve got an account and have used GitHub a couple of times but evidently not enough to use it everytime.

For instance, someone just linked Bravepipe and while I can read all the information, and there is plenty, I can’t find a way to download it.

What am I missing?

I wish I stayed with coding when I was in 8th grade but I didn’t know what it was going to be and I just wanted to play Aztec on one of the school’s 3 Apple computers. :man_facepalming:

Github & Gitlab host the source code but some projects also host binary files, the Android installable binary files are the APKs, if you mean this, GitHub - bravepipeproject/BravePipe: A libre lightweight streaming front-end for Android., it describes in the README the flavours and how to compile it, be careful when using already compiled APKs from unknown sources, as I can see BravePipe doesn’t exist as an pre-compiled APK on their Github, you have to do it by yourself.

So that’s it. I’m not missing it. (The ability to download from that page). It’s just not there.

Well then, it’s too far out into the unknown for me.

@404usernotfound I found it, Releases · bravepipeproject/BravePipe · GitHub, install BravePipe_v0.28.0-2.5.3.apk

The releases also appear if you click on the 3 dots beside the “Code” button in the main project page and choose “Tags”

I just don’t see anything that says “install”.

Download the APK, go to the downloads and tap on it, it will ask you to activate the installation from unknown sources and it will be installed after you activate it.

If you just click Open after the download it will ask you to open it with the Package Installer and then to install the app.

Okay, this is what I see when I follow your link

The three dots to the right don’t say tags…

…but it does say it underneath…

This is what I see when I click downloads at the bottom of the latest one…

I can’t figure what to do after that. I’ve clicked on just about everything on this page.

Scroll down to assets and click the apk you require to download it to your phone. Once downloaded I think you just click on it in your files and system will ask if you want to install…

That’s what I was looking for.
On my phone the text is too long and APK didn’t appear.
Assets. Nice. Thanks.

File Manager should unzip files by default.

But also @404usernotfound you will find some useful info here (in this thread):

And on related subject my thread here, if you haven’t already gone through that, might have something useful or of interest:

You can download the apk from F-droid, it seems the Releases are empty on github.

Another way to do this is to use obtainium, which lets you add GitHub android repos so it keeps them up to date.
