Brax 3 Not Working on Tello

The carrier I chose is Tello. I chose because I was told here that it was compatible with the Brax 3 phone. It’s not. I’ve been emailing Tello’s support and their engineers for 5 days. They say there’s nothing they can do.

You need to set your APN entry to “wholesale”, please see this reference:

Thank you for the reply. I did. It doesn’t work.

  • System Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Mobile data is active?
  • System Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Tello > Access Point Names shows wholesale and it is enabled?

So is it not making/receiving calls and/or not working with mobile data?

Yes, that is correct.

Calls AND mobile data not working? There are other Tello users such as @wardee that I know have successfully activated Tello (calls and data). Maybe they have a comment?

All I can say is that Tello is working here. I did all the things mentioned and then when I added ‘wholesale’ as the APN the cellular data turned on. So weird it’s not for you. I wonder if you could do a reset of your phone or something? Maybe something got wonky at setup.

Can you enter your phone’s IMEI in the compatibility checker: Bring Your Own Phone | Check Compatibility

The BraX3 IMEI range shows as fully compatible with Tello.
There is a very small chance that the IMEI didn’t get written on your phone correctly in the factory.

If it shows as compatible, I suggest you just give them a call / message them.

My phone is locked by another carrier. I didn’t do this, it was shipped to me like this. Quote from Tello Customer Service:

Dear James,
The phone device [Industries Lunaire Inc BraX3] is carrier locked. The device is compatible with our network but it will not work until it get unlocked by the original/previous carrier. Please contact the previous carrier to request they unlock the device. Once they confirm the device can be used with another carrier, insert the Tello SIM card in the phone and restart it. We have made the necessary adjustments to your account and the Tello SIM will automatically connect to out network once installed on a compatible and unlocked device. Once unlocked please disable Roaming and change the Preferred network type to LTE.”

No problem to return and get a refund. Just email [email protected] , You’re still in the return due to change of mind window.

For what it’s worth - the phone isn’t carrier locked. We would know better since we made the phone.

All of the phones we’ve made in the first manufacturing round, share the same IMEI range, which is 35000216 (first 8 digits of the IMEI). Carriers use the IMEI to identify whether a device is compatible and whether it is carrier locked.
If it were carrier locked, it wouldn’t have worked in over 90 countries where the BraX3 is currently used.

Do you mind messaging me your IMEI number in private here in the forum? I can take a look for you and see if there is any issue with it.

Posting for completeness. I was not able to receive images or videos via text. The APN settings were not as simple as adding “wholesale”.

Here is what I had to input for the Tello APN in order to receive media via text:

  • Name: Tello
  • APN: wholesale
  • Proxy: (leave blank)
  • Port: 8080
  • Username & Password: (leave blank)
  • Server: (leave blank)
  • MMSC: http://wholesale.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
  • MMS Proxy: (leave blank)
  • MMS Port: (leave blank)
  • MCC: 310 (I did not have this field)
  • MNC: 240 (I did not have this field)
  • Authentication Type: (leave blank)
  • APN Type: default, supl, mms (make sure all others are unchecked)
  • APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
  • APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4/IPv6

…so, this is my first non-Apple phone…how in the world is blank username and blank password an acceptable situation?

I really don’t understand, and really do want to know–anyone, please help it make sense. (In all my years interacting with computers, this seems like a massive security vulnerability.)

(I ask, because I was going to select Tello…)

That’s pretty standard for most data access, whether it’s a mobile provider (SIM) or broadband provider’s router settings…

Interesting…100% opposite my experience. I promptly change the broadband provider’s default user/pass combo (sticker on side of Gateway). I (of course) have zero experience with AOSP (etc.) SIM cards…

Shrugging shoulders and hitting the “I believe” button on this…

@dutchjim, were you able to resolve the issue?
I activated my Brax 3 IODE on Tello in September 2025, and all is well so far.

Update: I was apparently operating on WIFI. My router went down and now I have discovered I cannot access mobile data to use internet , download email, etc.

@ConSider I have been using the Brax3 with Tello since August 25th. Voice calls were fine but initially I could not get mobile data. I was able to resolve that issue by following these two steps (your mileage may vary but these have worked for two other users that I know of, namely @wardee and @handsolo ):

  1. I performed a factory reset (search for factory reset in settings). At least in my case, this operation preserved the Tello eSIM configuration

  2. I set the APN during Iode setup phase with these settings that user wardee posted in another thread (Don’t set your wifi during this phase. You can do that later. Under mobile data you can find the APN menu. Click on the “+” button to add your APN) :

You can find the APN settings posted by @wardee here:

@inverdell and @wardee , thank you both…so much!

I skipped the SIM install and played around at home for a good while…then got my Tello sim card and wondered what I was doing wrong when I went out into the world.

I used a USB-C thumb drive to backup, then a reset following @inverdell ‘s instructions, a re-load from backup, then following @wardee ‘s instructions…voila, I had internet. But then my Proton VPN and Pass broke…and I couldn’t load anything from F-droid or Aurora using cell data (I’ll investigate that, later).

The backup remembered my wifi, which then allowed me to go in to F-droid. An uninstall and reinstall of Proton VPN & Pass apps brought both those back to life.

Thank you to all participating here!!!

It turns out, this did not solve my problems…the browser was just loading from cache.

I do not have internet outside of a wifi connection, and am now stumped as to how to get internet/data access out in the wild.
