Considering service options for the new Brax3, are the Brax Virtual Phone Calls and SMS plans offered by Brax a good option?
Are these in any way similar to an eSIM, or totally different?
Sorry if this seems obvious to those more informed, but I’m brand new to this and have no idea what to use for connection service, except I don’t want to use conventional carriers.
I just got a Virtual Phone. I think it is has some good applications. I was disappointed that 2FA didn’t work on one site. So, I need to loom into Yubi key for that.
Are you using the Virtual Phone as connection service on your Brax3?
No. Sorry. I should have clarified that.
Brax virtual phone handles 2FA for most sites. I also give out the number for things that require a phone number where i don’t want to give my personal number.
The virtual phones are separate from eSIM.
SIM cards come in service & data (for phone use), service-only (for phone use), or data-only (usually for hotspots). The first two are obviously intended to go into your phone and are then tied to your phone’s identity (the IMEI). An eSIM is pretty much the same thing, except for it being digital and therefore irremovable/inseparable. At that point, I think it is a matter of choosing to not activate the eSIM. Regardless, a device like Brax3 is going to be better at the end of the day because it’s private by design. No SIM required, no eSIM embedded in it.
The virtual phones, from my understanding, work via Voice over Internet Protocol (or VoIP).
If you don’t want to use a conventional carrier, I believe the best way you can accomplish that is not use a SIM card in your phone from the moment it the phone is delivered to you… a SIM never touches it. Then, get a hotspot from a place like the Calyx Institute. They do no KYC SIMs and hotspots. It’s technically still the cellular network, but is as close to anonymous as you can get… with the advantage of having unlimited data and your own private WiFi anywhere there’s good enough reception.
Do a search on “Privacy Risks of SIM Cards” in the BraxTech community here and you’ll see a post I put out with a few YouTube videos in it. They’re a little long, but they’re good.
Much appreciated, TY for taking the time and attention to give a newbie a hand ![]()
