It’s all about scale. The bigger scale we can reach, the more options we will have on hardware customizations - especially for smartphones (a lot to pack in a small form factor). But we’re slowly getting there.
In the meantime, we’re working on some other device form factors that we have more flexibility with.
I would also love to see physical kill switches on the next iteration of the BraX phone. To my knowledge, the only devices with physical kill switches are the Librem 5 ($800) and the Unplugged Phone ($989). I suspect that these hardware switches will add significant cost to the build. The BraX3 is very reasonably priced compared to other options and allows for more users to enter the privacy phone space. Perhaps the next BraX device could have a standard and a Pro version with kill switches.
Thank you for the feedback.
The switches don’t actually add cost in terms of COGS. They do add quite a lot of R&D, but it can be all amortized if we’re selling a decent amount of phones. We’re getting closer to that volume.
I understand about physical switches. I was expecting (still hoping for) software toggles for SIMs and Cameras, like those for WiFi, Bluetooth, dark mode etc. The software toggle (enabled thru developer mode) for sensors works well. Any hope for future firmware upgrade?
BTW. no complaints, all seems well, I THANK YOUR TEAM!
Water resistance is an excellent idea. It reminds me of the small paper discs that Apple embeds in their products to avoid supporting warranties. I know of users who never had their i device anywhere near water sources, but their warranty requests were denied because of the relative humidity even in the lack of moisture, water or steam..
I would love to see that as well, and also an optional lora radio for meshtastic use. I feel like the first people to come out with a solid combo of privacy phone and mesh coms will have a market.
We will also require a portable antenna with stand so we can best exploit LoRa. An LNA and RF amp would also be nice along with companion battery pack and portable solar panel. I would extend this to a Walki Tappie with built in Keyer break in and small portable Iambic Bencher like paddles. I always carry a few sets of these micro sized light weight paddles just in case.
We will have more clarity within the next 30 days or so. I don’t want to guess, but unlikely tro ship this year. The project takes about 9-10 months from start and we’re busy with open_slate for now.
