Hi All - in a couple of previous new posts I have tried to set some basic tags, however have been completely unsuccessful… Am I missing something (e.g. it uses special formatting rather than just word/s separated by commas or semi-colons); or is this disabled, or restricted to admins and/or users who have reached a high enough trust level, or something else?

Well, all I can say is I have certainly found them helpful on numerous other community sites and forums. Both as a way to find older content in searches that is more specific (as the tags improve searchability/search results) and also when posting topics they seem (IME) to help solicit more feedback/involvement in those topics from other forum/community members.
It’s also a good way to provide some form of ad hoc ‘sub-category’ within each category without the need to artificially sub-divide a specific forum category into multiple smaller ‘sub-categories’, and I believe also allows it to be more organic and ‘only as needed’.
I also find it helpful (in some, not necessarily all, cases) if post titles at the top level of a category have tags visible along with any sub-category they are in, as it helps filter/prioritise what I read or when.
But that’s just IMO, YMMV of course…
