CoMaps Update - Re-download all maps?

Hi team. I am not sure where to ask this question. This morning F-Droid shows that there are updates. CoMaps indicates it has map updates. When I go check it shows 7GB of map data needs to be downloaded, for each of the areas I previously downloaded. I just downloaded 7GB of maps 10 days ago when I set up CoMaps. I am curious - when CoMaps is updated, does it require me to redownload all maps again? I thought perhaps it would just be specific maps that would need to be downloaded/updated, not the entire suite. This made me think possibly when there is an app update, it wipes all map data and I have to start again?

I use my B3 as a hotspot for my home as I have a large amount of data on my plan and do not need a separate internet provider. But I do not want to download another 7GB of maps perhaps every time CoMaps updates if I can avoid it.

As I am still getting familiar with Iode’ and F-Droid etc I am curious if this process occurs with all apps, or whether this may just be a product of CoMaps?

I use OrganicMaps on my android headunit in my car and it hasn’t asked for a full map update, that’s why I am curious about CoMaps.

Thanks for any insight!

I’ve not noticed any excessive downloading the past few months, but yes, it did have a big download this week. I suspect you just had a bad case of timing. CoMaps is a fork of OrganicMaps & and will likely have the same download needs.

I think you should be able to update the app without updating the maps; you’ll just have maps that aren’t as up-to-date. If I’m understanding their help page correctly, you need to have an updated app in order to get an updated map, but I don’t see why you couldn’t still use older maps if you don’t want to spend the bandwidth to update them yet. You also don’t need to update all your maps, just the areas that you want/need updated data for.

Thanks for the information, I’ll probably just run it as is for the time being. I’ll be at my family’s home for Christmas, so I’ll do the map updates on their wifi.

Thanks again

CoMaps has done the same to me. After an OS update all maps were wiped out and had to be downloaded again and it took two days this time instead of a couple hours

I had believed that the existing maps were still there, but yep, they are gone after the update. I think I’m ditching CoMaps but still need to do some research

It’s unfortunate that it does that I like the app due to not tracking but the updates make it frustrating when you may want to use it.

Hmm. I don’t think that has happened to me after any updates.

I have also experienced this problem. Ties up my bandwidth for quite awhile, downloading all of the maps needlessly.

Can you not separately make a back up of the maps pre-update and copy then back after?

A few weeks show, I installed the Organic Maps app on my Brax3, alongside CoMaps.

See: How do the features differ from those of Organic Maps? | CoMaps

Note that Organic Maps updates exhibit the same behavior as CoMaps.

I will be deleting Organic Maps whenever storage space becomes an issue, if not sooner.

Meanwhile here’s a tip that applies to both apps: When you get an Updater notification, allow it to run, without checking your map inventory. The update will only download the maps they have changed and your map collection will be fully up to date, ready for use.

If you examine your Downloads inventory, within the app, either during an update or after, a design defect will be revealed: The app compares the versions of all your downloaded maps to the versions in the online repository and erroneously concludes that the majority of your maps are out of date, thus initiating needless downloads. Lame!

I have confirmed this behavior in both apps. Once any update has been applied, just avoid opening the app’s Downloads selection, seen after touching the “hamburger menu” icon (3 horizontal bars). You can trust the Updater and you can use the other selections seen in the hamburger menu, without summoning a deluge of downloads.
