I just wanted to give at least one good news and not be only the messenger of rants and bad news.
6.7 and 6.8 have stabilized the signal strength in the 2 SIM modes. So the problem that I reported during the beta should not be considered a problem anymore.
Interesting - since I updated to 6.8 the other day I’m having endless troubles with connectivity for data on both my SIMs and Wi-Fi networks away from my home (I use a 5G network at home, so assume it’s 2.4G connections). Basically constantly have no Internet reported - and apps have no connectivity. Was this part of the beta issue @LostEther?
Restarting the phone usually doesn’t fix it - but will occasionally after 4 or 5 restarts over a 10 minute or so period - until it happens again… Having VPN off or on doesn’t change anything.
wifi are not concerned by my tests. Only signal strength from cell tower is.
You can easily log the signal strength trhough an app like signal monitor which is for cell tower only → not wifi.
So we are not talking about wifi here,
we are not talking about calling wifi.
We are talking about strength signal detection from cell tower.
During the beta, one of the SIM or both would drop signal regularly. That was the problem. Now it is a steady signal.
Whether the connection is good for a call, that’s an entirely other problem which is related to the provider
→ is it a Tier 1 ? a tier 2? a tier 3?
those tiers means is he sub renting lines and cell tower from Tier 2 or Tier 1 operators, there are a whole hierarchy for this. Like there is for global networks.
Right! That’s definitely not my issue, its internet access once connected - something for another thread.
May need to uninstall Proton VPN temporarily to eliminate it (and its kill switch) as the issue…
EDIT: And today I’ve started having weird issues with sims and calls, like my physical sim suddenly being locked for no reason and rejecting calls, and calls in and out connecting but silence the other end. Again requiring restarts to reset…
That’s typically what I have described into on of my old post of why this phone is a failure if you don’t limit the background processes at the OS level. So you problem seems more a latency problem of the system not responding than anything else.
I am using proton right now as we speak since we have the chance to have access to every no logs vpns in the world me and my teams. So let’s talk about that on another thread.
Yes I notice some really bad latency which I assume is OS / Processor related. Trying to take photos with Open Camera app is painful as there is a full 2 second or so delay from pressing shutter and the app actually taking a picture.
I assume this is impacting comms (both PSTN/Voice/SMS) and Data (Internet) too - but I haven’t tried to dig into that more yet as because it is my daily use phone, and has both my personal and work numbers, I am mainly focused on getting it to a stable workable state I can do 95% of what I could on my iPhone day to day (even if it means workarounds); before I start digging into the weeds to investigate areas that aren’t completely satisfactory.
Currently my priority issues are: (1) Android Auto (or other functionality) for use in car for Calls, SMS, Maps, and Media; (2) this new intermittent data loss issue (above) that’s appeared this week after latest OS update; (3) Dual SIM functionality management (i.e. desperate ring tones, and setting default SIM/Line for contacts); (4) ‘sandboxing’ (for want of a better term), iodé app, etc, we have discussed elsewhere.
If I can get those 4 items working reliably, or configured in a way that’s as good as you can achieve (for the last item) I’ll be fairly happy - and I will happily spend time then looking at the detail of the ‘not so ideal stuff’ and what a user can do to improve it; and what needs to be raised with devs to help with future improvements there, etc…
Sounds good - I am using ProtonVPN because I have the full suite, happy to consider others (like Mullvad) but don’t really want to pay for 2 VPNs. I do occasionally have issues on my Linux PC also, with what seems like ProtonVPN Kill Switch being active, even when it’s turned off in the app, and the app is disconnected. Like having it active even just briefly has left a permanent block in the network stack or routing - even though it’s subsequently been disabled… (and maybe this is a similar issue on the phone combined with the latency causign my issues above)?
