Is ZipXtract the best FOSS Zip File Utility?

Hi All - subject says it all - I’ve seen ZipXtract listed as the best open source zip utility for Android - can anyone vouch for that? Found these so far but no definitive guide as to which is the best and most trustworthy FOSS implementation:

  • ZipXtract
  • ZeeArchiver
  • Kudesnik Archiver
  • ToGoZip

There are others, but references to some of them are rather old…

Excluding Google drive open source ZIP EXTRACTOR for starters - for obvious reason.

Non-FOSS (and/or unverified) or paid ones include:

  • WinZip (supposedly an Android version)
  • WinRAR (RAR for Android?)
  • 7-Zipper
  • ZArchiver
  • ALZip
  • AndroZipper

I use ZipXtract and it does a good job. I was able to zip up some files, encrypt them, transfer them to my Linux system and decrypt them without a problem.

I heard some people were having issues with Kudesnik Archiver.
I don’t believe ToGoZip is compatible with the Brax3, at least not through F-Droid.

Thanks! I had downloaded this and trialled it in the meantime and it seemed to work great. So will stick with it for now I think. Seems pretty benign…

I notice it hasn’t been updated for about 2 years?

Cheers - I grabbed it from GitHub. I also discovered (after I posted last night) that the default Files app has some zip/compression functionality - you can browse into a zip and see contents and extract or copy it. Likewise you can compress stuff. I’m assuming this is all just standard zip functionality and doesn’t necessarily support 7zip, RAR or other compression formats - but still good to know. If it does then ZipXtract may be semi-redundant.

Also as noted int he thread below, your suggestion of…

…also has the exact same functionality as default Files so as noted I suspect they are one and the same, with just a changed icon (i.e. inverted fro the iodé version)? So that also has some zip/compression capability.

Yes. I was aware that the standard iode Files app and Fossify File Manager both have basic compression capability, but I believe ZipExtract gives you more options.

Absolutely - aside from supporting more formats I’d expect the compression algorithms are superior when creating archives, for starters…
