The new phones are at iode 6.3 and the latest update based on the app is at 6.6 (8/3/2025 date) The update itself shows its 1.4 gb. So the steps is to 1. backup device and 2. download the 1.4gb and then i assume it will ask whether i wish to upgrade it? Is the upgrade actually a full reinstall of the OS?
I tried to update few times to 6.6, but the phone just reboots few times and is back on 6.3 after it comes up.
I was able to go to 6.6 last night after the download finished. This morning the phone became slow when using it and a popup appeared saying the iode os wasn’t responding so after waiting and having it re-appear, i rebooted the phone. I haven’t had a problem with the OS since then.
Had you unlocked your bootloader? A Mediatek firmware bug borks slot b so it won’t be usable when you unlock the phone. Unfortunately you may need to use the Firmware Update option with SP Flash to correctly reset the device (it will also relock the bootloader).
I tried to update the software via ADB but did not work I guess. When the phone reboots it displays some writing on the screen but is so small that is unreadable, so I have no clue if it is asking me do to something or not. I thought that if you reboot the phone and you uncheck OEM unlock it will be locked again. There is any video showing all these steps?
The link for the SP flash tool does not open: https://file-share.space/s/atCimcS34aLpbpc
No video, but I wrote up a guide for this as well to more simply focus on this “Firmware Update” need when OTA (and adb) updates are broken.
I am guessing it displays something to the effect of “Orange Mode: OS is not verified or custom OS” which is their wordy way of saying the device is unlocked. Note that just selecting “Allow OEM unlocking” in Developer options in the OS should not give this message, you would have to have unlocked it from the bootloader with a fastboot flashing unlock. Did you do this, or has this message been flashing by since you first got the device?
yes, I unlocked the boot loader with ADB but was not able to upload the new image. and the small writing that I cannot read did not help. so I stopped not knowing what is the screen saying. I will try again this weekend.
OK, understood. Please do give a try when you can to the SP Flash Firmware Update process I link above, it is required now that your slot b has been borked ![]()
Nasty Mediatek firmware bug as I understand, it is out of our control but hopefull Braxtech can work with them to get a patched update. Users that are going to want to try Ubuntu Touch, etc. will be unlocking left and right and then realizing it is borked.
I was able to install the lastest firmware with the SPflash tool. there was no feedback on the phone and on the tool istself to let me know that it was doing something and after about 5 min I disconnected the pnone. luckily it went through.
The problem is that this update deleted the Magic Earth App, and instead installed the CoMaps app, but this map app is bad and cannot find addresses. Why was the map that worksed removed?
The iodé developers stopped bundling magic earth because they are making users pay a small yearly fee to use it. Iodé chooses to support free software. That being said, you can uninstall CoMaps and install Magic Earth yourself. Currently the only way to pay their yearly fee is through the Google Play store but they say they are working on an alternative
Yup, what @guardian241 said
We just can’t pre-bundle an app that will have a paywall (if you install now I think it will work for a few months before it stops and asks for the very modest donation). CoMaps finds addresses for me better than Magic Earth, but “YMMV”
It does seem to get me to the right block at least, it sort of depends on how built-out the Open Street Maps data is for the area you are searching for I think).
