It definitely has a “Must-Have” factor ![]()
my laptop tends to overheat unless i put it on top of a mesh type of raised stand. The Brax inside the folio or rugged case will be like having it sit in a winter parka. have you or will you test it to make sure there are no overheating issues?
Reckoning from Brax3 it shouldn’t have a problem, laptops always need an airflow to be kept at normal temperatures, it’s a different situation.
Just an example of where we will indicate certificates. Consider it as a placeholder at the moment.
That’s all part of the product lifecycle before we start producing.
How come this device (and by extension, the Brax3) uses a Mediatek chip instead of a snapdragon?
From what I remember, Mediatek doesn’t open source their code.
Nobody opens the code, Brax claims to have audited the code as a company but it’s not open for the public, anyway if you are a “western” citizen you would prefer to have Chinese hardware instead of something that is related to your government, if you were Chinese it would be probably the inverse true.
Doesn’t snapdragon open source their code though? I care more about the emulation aspect as I have heard of issues in the past with Mediatek cpus compared to Snapdragon
What exactly are you interested in so that we can look into it? Mediatek has open code for several boards. Are you talking about Snapdragon desktop? I think they dropped Linux support for desktop.
I’m talking about the mobile processors, I am interested in game emulation. Nothing too crazy, just lighter older games.
I don’t know much of that, whatever can be done on Android should work, when the Linux support comes out we’ll see in practice what is able to run and there will be continuous advancement in support.
Oh, is linux not going to be available on release? I thought we were gonna be able to buy the device with linux installed.
Search in this thread, I remember that it will come later, they are still trying to decide the SoC and the design so first we’ll have the Android support for sure.
Ah, alright, thank you.
There are plenty of ARM linux distros available already, atleast one of them will work.
On another note, has Brax considered a tough keyboard case since Slate is security focused tablet, and top security tablet currently on the market is a tough cased one also? To remain competitive on the market…
It’s not about ARM, there is much tuning to be done with the device tree, the binary blobs and the flashing, partitions, bootloader etc.
I would also love to see a rugged keyboard tablet combo.
MediaTek has as much open-sourced as Qualcomm, Tensor, Exynox, etc. - which is not much. We’re advocating for opening more code to the public, but we have nowhere near enough the leverage big phone brands have - and they couldn’t care less, so there is that. We’re hoping to get more leverage as we grow, and/or get bigger brands advocate for the same.
MediaTek is Taiwanese. There are Chinese chip makers but nowhere near MediaTek in terms of quality and security.
MediaTek had issues with their low end (A and P series) back in the day. The issues were not really caused by MediaTek, but by the phone OEM’s which never bothered to update, since they were selling 100$ phones in 3rd world market, and updating meant less sales for their newer models. This is completely changed with Dimensity (their new higher-end phone chip series) and Genio (their high end enterprise series).
As of today, Ubuntu boots on G720. It will also boot on the open_slate on launch. We just can’t guarantee that all features will be working. We are clarifying delivery timelines with the integrator. We will soon publish a destination where all progress could be tracked.
Will I be able to install another distro with mainline kernel on open_slate at launch?
Thank you for the information!
