Can NOT Wait!!! I already blew my personal money for Feb. So I’m thinking realistically March or April is when I can order. Hoping the good price will still be in place. I have a brax 3. I forgot, do they take your money when you order, or when it ships?

Payment due on order. There is a change of mind refund before shipment though.

With an iPad, it also has phone capability - will the Slate emulate that function?

You will be able to make VoIP calls. No cellular phone calls.

Just to confirm, the port just to the left of the USB-A is the DP right? Confirming the Opt2 - 3.2 DP is not the USB-C indicated.

Yes - FWIW my preferred vote would be 1+2 combined also, as best option.

Have voted Option 3 for now as closest to that.

P.S. @plamen keep in mind some people have issues with colours (e.g. are colour blind), so colour only option (like #1) isn’t always the best solution for them.

It says in the spec the it’s a dual use USB-C / Display Port, so no - the port left of the word 3.2 DP is the dual use port with Display Port.

The port you are referring to isn’t a USB-C - it’s microHDMI.

(EDITED last part of last sentence to be more accurate / concise as per Plamen's confirmation below.)

that’s valid. will be considered.

The port between the usb C and usb A is a microHDMI.

The USB-C port to the right (colored in red in option 01 and 03, is a usb 3.2 with DP support (you need to conenct via dp port to usb-c converter).

Ah yes, I recall now thanks. I forgot about the microHDMI.

I appreciate Mycenius’ feedback. I tend to forget about color concerns. I like options 1+2. And as Rob mentioned, captive screws.

for mobile data, beyond a travel LTE/5G router, how compact a mobile modem can be ? I would prefer it to be connected and powered by a USB port with a 90°-180° angled jack so that is can be attached on the back with some removable glue or magnet or some kind of strap

You can check compatible module with the m.2 on the open_slate here: Genio 720: Advanced Power-Efficient IoT Platform for GenAI | MediaTek Genio , section Companion Modules.

The 5g module is pretty compact (52.0 mm Ɨ 30.0 mm Ɨ 2.3 mm).

I’m a little vague on VOIP use - in the small city where I live, the local provider, LocalTel, is only providing VOIP phones now. They made me drop my ā€œcopper lineā€ service and installed a small modem in the front room to keep up my ā€œhome phoneā€ service. So, I’m totally on VOIP now, and I guess all the rest of their customers are as well. If so, would I be able to use an OpenSlate to call my relatives and friends in the community here in WA? Or, is there some other, arcane process to do voip calls? (Turn around three times, and throw salt? - the world wants to know…)

He said it above, an M2 5G module. It will give phone and mobile data ability to the tablet and it will be fully inside the device.

This will be the one time I feel like I may need to invest in some port plugs. With so many I’ll need to protect when not in use.

I also love that there are all the switches so I don’t have to figure out how to cover the cameras. Is there a privacy screen that will be available or is there a standard sized one that can be used? I see ā€œTampered screen protectorā€ as an option but not sure if that is a privacy screen. Is that supposed to say ā€œtemperedā€?

Am I reading correctly that the M.2 slot will only support 1 lane of PCIe Gen 2? Also, if I wanted to install NixOS (I know it’s not officially supported), would I be able to?

It should be 1 port, not 1 lane. Probably you have to do serious work to port NixOS, I don’t think it would work out of the box.

Indeed on Mediatek’s website it specifies an 1-lane PCIe.

I have assuned so FWIW, the same typo was on the BraX3 information originally…
