SECURE, PEER-TO-PEER MESSENGING APPs:

https://BRIARproject.org/

Briar is a secure, peer-to-peer messaging application designed for activists, journalists, and anyone requiring a safe and robust communication method without reliance on central servers.

Messages are synchronized directly between users’ devices, ensuring no central entity stores or controls the data.

The app operates without a central server, using direct, encrypted connections between devices to prevent surveillance and censorship.

It supports private messaging, groups, forums, and blogs, all protected against various threats including metadata surveillance, content filtering, takedown orders, denial-of-service attacks, and internet blackouts.

Briar can function both online and offline. When the internet is unavailable, it can sync messages via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or memory cards, maintaining communication during crises.

When the internet is available, it uses the Tor network for encrypted communication, protecting user identities and relationships from surveillance.

The app is open-source, with its source code available for inspection and audit, and all releases are reproducible to verify that the published binaries match the source code exactly.

There are no advertisements or tracking, and user data is only stored on individual devices unless shared with other users.

To add a contact, users must connect directly, typically by scanning each other’s QR codes, ensuring authenticity and preventing impersonation.

The app does not require personal information to set up, only a username and password, and if forgotten, messages become inaccessible.

Briar does not support features like photos, videos, calls, or stickers, focusing instead on simplicity and security.

It runs in the background to maintain real-time communication, which can impact battery life.

The app includes features like a panic button, app lock, and dark mode, and a desktop client is in alpha development.

Briar Mailbox is a companion app that allows users to receive encrypted messages while Briar is offline, enhancing message delivery reliability.

The app is available on the Google Play Store, F-Droid, and Uptodown, with the latest version on Uptodown being 1.5.14.

It is not available for iOS, and there is no cross-device account functionality or password recovery, meaning users must securely manage their credentials.

While highly secure and suitable for high-risk environments, its lack of social features and user-friendly design makes it less suitable for casual users, though it is praised as one of the most privacy-focused messaging apps available

, it is not owned or created by Apple. The app uses end-to-end encryption and is designed to provide secure communication across different platforms, including those not owned by Apple.

Yep, well known WhatsApp is not secure and Meta probably has access to all the comms and data within it.

When the answer to questions about proof of encryption and privacy of data from Zuckerberg is essentially “Yeah, it’s encrypted and private mate, just trust me…”, you know how secure it is…

I use signal. I can use briar but know few people that do.

Actually, next time I get near some important to me people I’ll be downloading/side loading Briar and setting us up as connections, something I didn’t want to do over the internet.

Also, the Briar Mailbox is designed to be set up on a always on devices so you can get that mail message when your offline with your phone.

So I’ll go to that later.

I’d like to try session but will wait u til I get my brax as I don’t want to set it up on my current phone and move it to the brax.

Threema requires payment and I’d like to try that later.

From reading the websites, Session appears to be the best match for me.

Now to convince others to use it!
