Text Message duplicates

Hi folks, I’m having a strange problem with the text messaging on my phone. I use the default app and I noticed that sometimes a message will be duplicated, as if it were two separate But twin contacts that had messaged me. This always happens when some sends a picture, it arrives as a sepate chat with the same number. Now today I replied to a message from a friend who probably did a group message, and my reply was sent back to me duplicated in 13 separate messages, each with a different number!

This is confusing and clogging up my messaging, not to mention a privacy issue, there appears to be some function issues can this be sorted?

Hildeguard

those are known problems of the native apps, try some other app from Fdroid like QKSMS

Hi Hllde;

One thing to check is under the messages app settings:

“Send long messages as MMS” and “Send group messages as MMS” ensure these are enabled

I was sending duplicates until I enabled. Not sure if this affects your situation but worth a look

Thank you I will try that

Just a heads up @HIlde do you get charged for MMS or are they included free on your plan?

If the former just be aware these settings will cause you to incurr any MMS costs you may be liable for from your Telco/Carrier plan.

In my case I have “Send long messages as MMS” disabled as I want these sent as multiple SMS (which are free), not an MMS that costs me 30¢ each message with my carrier!

I only have MMS active for ‘group messages’ and obviously by default if I send attachments (e.g. pictures).

Hi I’m not sure what MMS means. I tried enabling the MMS things above and nothing changed. I’m not sending duplicates - I’m recieving them, then there are two Janes or Freds etc and when they reply it could go to either one, then the converstion threads are getting cut and hard to follow. I want just one of each of my contacts and all comms to be in one linear thread

a part of the problem is the native app, use another app from Fdroid and remove Fossify Messages to avoid conflicts Settings > Apps > Preinstalled apps > Communication, if nothing changes go back to the native app.

Thanks, any idea which one to try that I can use without my contacts having to join a new messaging app? [cause they wont]

I told you above, QUIK SMS | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository

What do you mean by “your contacts having to join”?

The other people don’t have to do anything, it’s on your phone. I think your contacts don’t even need to be accessed if you mean that, you can enter the number directly.

I meant that if I use say Simplex my friends would have to join that to communicate with me. I found QUIK SMS and will try it, okay it might be working - the duplicates have dissapeared, I’ll give it a few days

here we are dealing with SMS/MMS apps which use the mobile carrier, anything else is a kind of 3rd party Whatsapp/Viber messaging service based on an internet connection.
