@Haley one last thing - appreciate the response above and don’t mean to give you an unintentional ‘third degree’ or anything - but just want to make sure we are both on the same page, and talking apples for apples, please:
I assume you had all the Google Apps installed and were just not logged in? And you weren’t using any stubs right? So no Google Account was logged in (anywhere) on the device?
The physical navigation of the screen with the car controls (knobs, etc, all worked fully)?
When you say the SMS was working you were using voice to send and receive (i.e. TTS and STT)?
As per #1 above, if you had G Maps installed you were using default Google Voice for that obviously (again TTS for directions and STT input for searching/destination choice/etc)?
If you weren’t logged into Google at all, you also had never logged into Google on that device (e.g. to enable the Digital Assistant of Voice Recognition by setting Personal Recommendations and such)?
If you weren’t using any G Apps and/or had stubs installed would you mind listing which stubs or G apps you did have installed, if any;
and which other non-G apps you were using with AA that worked fine (e.g. OsmAnd Maps, Fossify Messages for SMS, Signal/Molly/Telegram messenger, default Calendar? And did you have any third party TTS or STT installed like Sherpa or FUTO, etc (and were these what was working with AA).
And were these all the same when you tried on both vehicles?
Sorry - that’s a few more questions than I intended, but that would be really helpful to compare what you had on device vs. what I have if you can provide any help with that…

JM: I did log into the Google Account - kind of getting access to my save games on games I play
The physical navigation of the screen with the car controls (knobs, etc, all worked fully)?
JM: With the Nissan, only one frame per minute or so. On the rental, all worked.
When you say the SMS was working you were using voice to send and receive (i.e. TTS and STT)?
JM: I tend to display SMS only. Never voice. Voice is only phone
As per #1 above, if you had G Maps installed you were using default Google Voice for that obviously (again TTS for directions and STT input for searching/destination choice/etc)?
JM: I never use google voice. Not in the previous car/with previous phone etc.
If you weren’t logged into Google at all, you also had never logged into Google on that device (e.g. to enable the Digital Assistant of Voice Recognition by setting Personal Recommendations and such)?
JM: I never use the digital voice assistant.

JM: Can’t tell. Only installed what iodé Aurora proposed me to install for Android Auto.

JM: In my Nissan, with 1 minute display screen show, all I tested. Whatsapp, Agenda, Contacts. But barely usable due to the 1 screen refresh per minute.
On the Rental, fluid.
And were these all the same when you tried on both vehicles?
JM: Tried on both vehicules. But my Nissan is from 2020, while the Alpha Romeo had 10Kkm, so very recent.
@Haley thanks for the more detailed response. Appreciated. I’m discussing AA with @rik on the iodé community - so all this is helpful!
Edit:
P.S. Yes and this kinda is my issue - AA won’t work properly unless you log into Google, and logging into Google - even just for your ‘games’ - completely defeats the whole point of having a BraX3 degoogled privacy phone… i.e. AA won’t work reasonably without you sacrificing your privacy to the big G - putting you back to square one.
So I got AA working a few days ago on my brax3 (did not try until now). All I did was
Install stubs from github
Update AA on Aurora
Plug in device via usb cable (used an old red oneplus cable) allow permissions
And AA popped right up, i can use osmand (which is my preferred map app), for turn by turn directions using rhvoice.
I can use vlc player for my music
And even use things like bravepipe for youtube and elementx for telegram all through AA.
I’ve tested using osmand for real directions for hour plus long drives, while playing music with vlc.
Made multiple phone calls using the infotainment screen.
Everything works perfect, only thing i hope for is wireless support at some point in the future, but it is not needed.
When setting up i had to click “continue on phone” from the radio, then follow instructions on phone and allow permissions. You have to make sure you do that.
Update
Just used AA and osmand for a 200 mile work trip and it worked perfect while playing my music through vlc the whole time.
Good to know. I suspect we are going to need to start making a table referencing working / non-working car units and aftermarket head units. We love compatibility tables (or love to hate them) when trying to get away from mainstream big tech so it seems
Agreed. I have an eonon unit in my mazda and my toyota and they both work.
They both run official android, but they do sell some running linux that i would like to try.
