My Brax3 is working fine. But one thing I’ve noticed from the very beginning: It looks like a small portion of the screen isn’t being used. At the bottom, there’s roughly 1/4 inch (6mm) of screen that’s black. There’s no similar band of black at the top or on either side. It’s there no matter what app, or even when the lock screen, is showing.
I don’t like the large size of the phone, but apparently I’m in the small minority, since all phones seem to be getting bigger and bigger so there’s no market for folks like me. But if I have to be lugging a huge phone around, at least the whole screen ought to be used!
Anyone have an explanation? See photos below – the tip of my pen is pointing to the area in question when my mail app is running and when only the lock screen is showing.
Hello there. What you’re looking at is the so called “chin” of the display. It is not an active display area. It’s not related to a specific functionality, but rather limitations of the display component.
I guess I’m not following. Could you have made the display, and therefore the whole phone, that much shorter? If so, why didn’t you? If it doesn’t serve any useful purpose, I’d think it shouldn’t be there.
Mark, hopefully you can start a thread with shortcomings you discover that need to addressed in the next iteration of the phone. There’s probably several other things we have all lived with that could be changed and perhaps they will work with you
The LCD display we’re using on this BraX3 device requires this chin (inactive area). It’s a limitation of the display model. We have opted in for a mid-range display on the BraX3 to keep the costs down. We’re planning future iterations that will include a higher end display.
So now we have on of “those” types here. I am “ONLY JOKING” but I never even noticed this, but in another forum for another phone I have, this one guy and only this 1 guy is always complaining about the chin, the bezel size , camera cut out i snot how he likes it and a bunch of things no one else even notices.
“Those” types? Compliment accepted! (I used to be a radiologist, and I’d like to think noticing things that others don’t was an indispensable trait in that profession).
I do think there’s a market for smartphones with a smaller form factor, but I have no data to prove that. Nobody’s really offering one, so we can’t see how they do in free-market competition. I do know that several of my friends lament the passing of the SE iPhones, known for their smaller size. Maybe it’s an age thing? I don’t play games on my phone, and neither do my aforementioned friends. My previous phone was a Pixel 5, deGoogled by Braxtech, and I held onto that until the screen was no longer responding consistently to touch. Only then did I dust off my brand-new BraX3 that I’d purchased a year earlier. It looked monstrous compared to the Pixel 5.
A YouTuber who goes by DataSlayer did a post over a year ago on a bunch of smartphones he bought on Temu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvZQ09jQpIc. Most of them frequently phoned home to China, of course. But plenty of them were small – some astonishingly so – and I thought it’d be great if Braxtech added one or more of these small ones to their lineup of deGoogled phones. As we all know, Braxtech moved in a different direction.
It’s a great trait you have indeed! And you are not alone. I’ve noticed the dead area in the bottom myself. Would love a BraX4 version which is shorter by at least 20% for a better fit in the pockets.
