I’m curious to know if there are any news from the Linux side with the soc. Can it start with the mainline kernel?
Bugger, I’m going to be half way to work when the sale opens in Australian/Sydney time of 6:30am on the Wed 25th Feb.
Chose the rugged case because it appears to have a handle on the back for holding the tablet. Currently own an 8” Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro SM-T320. They put the WIFI antenna where the buttons are so the hands holding the tablet absorbs the WIFI signal. Have to deliberately hold the other end to get a clear signal and I want the option to not use wifi or Bluetooth. Assume the usb-c to RJ45 is for ethernet connectivity? More and more info coming out WIFI/4,5,6G isn’t too healthy for living organisms.
Yes the Samsung tablet is very old, basically can only play Youtube videos.
Thanks for creating the Slate project. Hopefully we can dual boot Android or Linux?
Hi @plamen, just had a possible idea for the early bird orders. Maybe toss in a choice of a free brax tech hat or t-shirt.
Hey Folks. I’m so excited to hear you’re going to go with the OLED premium option (will be snagging one for myself) and my father. Although he’s still adamant that IPS is better as it’s lighter, but then again I’m 30 and he’s 65, so not sure how weight affects people with age. Just had a quick inquiry as I didn’t see much mentioned or finalized about it:
What did you guys decide to do with regards to the Esim, or Regular SIM cellular option ? Will it be integrated or will it be scrapped ? And if integrated, which method did you decide to go with ? Cheers Guys and thank you so kuch for all that you’re doing.
I think the SoC didn’t change so you either use an M.2 module or a USB/Bluetooth one, this means you probably can find devices that accept either SIM or eSIM or both.
if it’s not too late, It would be nice to have a physical switch on the outside to mute calls/notifications similar to iphones (as opposed to having to log in, then go to settings, then mute). One inconspicuous action as opposed to 3!
That’s more of a OS specific software feature, which isn’t really something you want on a device which encourages installing your own OS.
Most Linux distros wouldn’t be able to utilize the extra switch as far as I know.
If you connect it on a GPIO you can do it whatever you want, we can add 10 such programmable switches because people beyond the rugged case fetish they also have a physical switch fetish.
How much are the cases gonna cost?

Once the product is in stock, we will offer it via the brax.me store which will accept crypto, check, etc.
eSIM will most likely not be supported on open_slate, as MediaTek has no plans to enable it on this chip, as far as we’re aware. We’re evaluating the option to have connectivity integrated in the SoC and have a killswitch connected to it.
Hi community,
As you are aware, we’re close to launching our crowdfunding campaign for open_slate.
We’re fully ready with our landing page including product descriptions, more visuals, videos, available SKUs, etc.
We’d love to hear some feedback on our landing page before we launch the campaign, as we’d like to make sure we didn’t miss anything.
So, I’d like to ask if anyone would like to get an early preview of our campaign and help us by providing feedback. If so, like this comment. I will select 3-5 users and will send them an invite to the test preview page by the end of today.
Disclaimer: testers won’t be able to order before the official launch of the campaign. The early test preview will allow to place a test order, but not place an actual one.
Sorry for being late to the party! I tried to read everything, but may have missed something. Sorry if some questions may be redundant:
- Why no ECC-Memory? (why no SoC that supports ECC) (Linus Torvalds on that matter: https://youtu.be/mfv0V1SxbNA?t=497)
- Why no expandability inside the case? Would be nice to have some spare room, maybe for a 2.4G dongle or a LoRa transceiver.
- Is this device supported by upstream Linux / AOSP or do you ship with custom patches?
- Is the firmware open? (linuxboot?)
- Can it boot Windows for ARM?
Thinking a bit in a different product category:
- Tablet as viewer for your phone like NexDock + NexPhone or CrowView: I think the possiblity to use the tablet as USB-C Monitor/Keybord would be a great addition to the existing versions and may even be released as a cheaper stand alone viewer only version without cpu.
As fot the Addons:
- Keyboard with a large enter key: if there is no possiblity to get localized keyboards it would be great to have at least a second option with international english layout (large enter key) in addition to us layout (small enter key).
- The SoC has GbE on board, why not expose them, but use a usb-c ethernet dongle?
- Mount Clips: I’m not sure if the folio supports the extra weigth, but I like the idea of the CrowView mount clips ( Laptop Stand Mount Clip for Instant Second or Third Display Dual Monitor Display Tablet Smartphone iPad ) + a usb-c cable that is just long enough to charge the phone with the tablet. Also it would be nice to have a magnetic version (iPhone, Pixel) instead of clips.
Looking forward to the start of the campaign!
As far as I can understand,
- the memory could be ECC, the published specifications are not so detailed
- it has a M.2 PCIe 4.0 x1-lane inside
- some tuning with patches has been done
- it uses binary blobs like Android smartphones
- it should be able to boot Windows but it should be tuned by someone, initially comes with Android and Ubuntu
Any consideration concerning “blue light toxicity” concerning “brax product displays” on-going?

Launch clock glitch or delay?
Hi Community.
New IndieGoGo Launch Date: March 3rd, 11:30 AM PST (Yes, Really)
We’re pushing the open_slate launch to March 3rd, 11:30 AM PST.
Minor miscommunication with IndieGoGo about tax collection. They’re releasing a new feature that lets us handle US/Canada/EU/UK taxes properly at checkout. Worth waiting for.
If you visited the page and saw the countdown jump forward, it’s not a glitch. We updated it. The timer works. I swear.
One more week. Then we launch.
Hello,
Loving the idea of an OLED display for the Pro version, how are you all planning on combating the potential issue of screen burn in?
Also, how come the pro version now only has the OLED screen as an option instead of being an optional upgrade?
