Open_slate MEGATHREAD

The best you can do to mitigate burn in is to follow common use guides for that (e.g. don’t leave it ON when not in use for hours).

The display is not really a modular upgrade. Can’t just switch it. We’re treating the Base and Pro version of open_slate as differnet SKUs that will run a variation of different OS. We won’t be supporting a third SKU at the moment (e.g. Pro with IPS display).

So, in the interests of converting my poor gf Apple fan-girl, would it be possible to install IOS on one of these? For myself, I’d be happy with the pro and any of the Linux distros, but for her either pro or base would work to replace her ancient ipad2, but to sweeten the deal I may have to try putting IOS on it so all her zombie devices can still talk. think that could work?

why would you do this? installing IOS turns it into a bad Ipad. Just get an Ipad

It was mentioned on day 28:
There was a question about dual-boot capabilities, is being worked on, so likely/will happen?
Also on day 28:
There was a question about having cellular VOICE and data capabilities (function like a cellphone). The answer was yes, if a third party M.2 cellular modem is installed. Will it be tested or optioned so we can know what modem works? Is this correct?

I’d prefer to get rid of my old cell phone and only use the tablet for cell phone calls, data and as a tablet with dual boot to Android or a desktop like Linux. No I won’t look weird holding it to my head. Assuming an application (does it exist?) would use the internal mic and speakers for “speakerphone” capabilities when making a voice call.

Am I understanding correctly that the above functionality can be had with your new Slate hardware and existing known software?

Sorry if this is a repeat question, I’ve been looking for years for the above features.

so does it go live on 24th or 7 days later as the countdown shows on 23rd?

Also, is it possible to order anywhere else than IndieGoGo? They have horrible Privacy Policy :frowning:

A response to when is 7 posting above yours. Plamen answers your question.

What’s the plan after Brax Open_Slate?

Any ideas about a potential full fledged laptop or desktop using x86_64?

Maybe an ARM Desktop more powerful than Open_Slate?

I would love to hear what else you all have in mind

  1. Could on-device AI be used on either the base or the pro model? If so, which ones?
  2. Could the device support the OpenMandriva operating system?
  3. Could the device support the GhostBSD operating system?

Laptops can already run Linux and are more open source than the tablet or the phone since on the laptop the only binaries is the firmware, the drivers are mostly open source. You can also find some Pine64 notebooks.

The infographic here says that it supports major LLMs and the nvidia TAO toolkit, https://www.mediatek.com/hubfs/MediaTek%20Assets/Pdfs/Infographics/MediaTek%20Genio-720%20-%20520.pdf

Any system could be ported with necessary tuning, I believe they have used Halium for hardware abstraction so you should port Halium to the target distribution and many other things which could be copied from Ubuntu.

you can’t run iOS on any non-Apple product.

Dual boot won’t be supported on day 1. We don’t have an ETA on it, but do plan to develop this capability once we launch the product.

Please refer to the latest specs (this topic) in regards to cellular connectivity. I will post an update once we have it finalized.

We’re finalizing our roadmap for 2026 and 2027. We will probably publish it in the next couple of months.

Both Base and Pro support up to 10 AI TOPS

The device will have mainline linux kernel support. So if the maintainer of OpenMandriva wants to port the OS, they can do that. This applies to any Linux / Android distribution.

In our experience with BraX3, as far as custom OS support goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. We can give a boost to distro maintainers (financial boost, share dev kits, etc.), but how well it is supported is up to them.

In regards to running AI: The soc itself can deliver up to 10TOPS and have 16Gb ram at most, which is probably only enough for very slow interference on 14ish billion parameters quantized models.

If you want to run anything larger, you could try to install an m.2 accelerator card, but power consumption and heat dissipation might become an issue. Transfer speed will also become an issue with only PCIe 2 x1, so a card with dedicated RAM is a must have.

What does this mean for early purchasers of the the Slate? Is the issue just working out the setup procedure or will it require firmware changes to allow dual boot? If firmware, will the initial Slate release allow re-flashing or will it only be available in later hardware releases? Sorry if I’m not understanding.

Will the initial run of the Slate be capable of re-installation of Android and Linux as dual boot or will it require a newer hardware/firmware release (repurchase) of the Slate hardware?

Newer hardware won’t be required.
Similar to the BraX3, we will be providing all tools and documentation to reinstall firmware, reformat partitions, unlock bootloader, etc. etc.
