Open_slate MEGATHREAD

If I had paid more attention to this spec during the order process I would have probably too. I guess it could be circumvented by adding external monitors in an office set up but it would defeat the portability purpose of the tablet.

That won’t be possible for us to do from the fulfillment center. We need to see the dependencies between components and code to validate if it will be possible to simply replace your display with the LCD one.

Thanks for the response. If there is a reasonably simple way to make it happen I think this would interest others as well.

The OLED display was specifically added to the Pro version on request by the community. Therefore, I would expect the vast majority to stick to that decision.

It was me, I was the culprit, I’m the worm in the system that started the push for it lol. Can’t live without my OLED hahahahahahaha. I’m so glad prod went with it. It will be a game changer.

Also their was someone here that asked if we can use other OS on it, and which Linux ones have it, from my understating Fedora, Debian, and Arch all support ARM, therefore you can technically have %90 of linux distros on it, since other variants are just a fork of these main 3. Here’s to the Open_Slate project, and those of us in here who supported it. :clinking_beer_mugs:

Hi community, we’ve posted a new update, including addressing some of the frequently asked questions (mostly addressed here as well): https://www.indiegogo.com/en/projects/braxtechnologies/open_slate/updates/2

Thank you for this. I was surprised to see that you guys had the tablet at an actual reasonable price putting aside the kickstarter price. It may be thicker, but it is quite nice to see a surface pro equivalent tablet. The amount of ports is also really good. I am wondering whether the durable casing will be watertight or be able to do the keyboard. Kind of surprising to see the hardware switches too. That is extremely nice to see. Privacy devices tend to be low end and obscenely expensive for what you get. The phone seems to be a dime a dozen one but that also means it will likely be successful putting aside whatever is done with software. This is unfortunately making Librem the only one with readily accessible hardware switches that I am aware of. You guys did do massively better on the tablet side of things though. Maybe that will be your signature product for now. Hopefully the software gets good and you guys can potentially make an actual competitor like for like with Librem on your next design. That thing has been around for so long and no one has really been able to dethrone it.

I hope we will be able to use a normal Linux bootloader on the Open_Slate and not have to mess around with weird partitioning, custom scripts, ect. like on other tablets.

I checked the project this morning on Indiegogo and see sales have reached the $1 Million dollar figure. Congrats to the Brax team. Hope everything goes well and can’t wait to get the tablet…..at some point.

Forgive me if I missed these but after reading through the thread I don’t think these questions were asked:

  • Is the stylus tip and battery be easily replaceable (especially the tip)?
  • As I understand it there won’t be a charger in the package with the slate, what should I be looking at for for a charger? PD 3.0? Watts?

Good questions, and will it support quick chargers?

Yes, both will be.

We’re finalizing the battery details in April. We will advice on the charge speed supported, and protocols.

Open Slate project looks awesome, sorry I missed the cutoff date! :worried:. Will there be GPS receiver integrated?

Much like other tablets, AFAIK it’s integrated into the board. It can be disabled with the dedicated killswitch.

Hey @plamen , thanks for keeping the backers updated with your posts. I’d like to recommend the following idea to help make Open_slate a truly unique product from not only a hardware perspective with switches but also from a software engineering perspective by making it very accessible for the less technically savvy backer.

THE IDEA:
Focus on shipping Open_slate with Linux as primary OS, but include an open source Android OS Emulator (Eg. QEMU or some thing similar). Tune/Config QEMU to run BraxOS. This way the tablet users get the best of both world, ability to run Linux + Android apps side-by-side :-
:white_check_mark: No need for messy dual boot setup and having to reboot between Linux or Android

:white_check_mark: No need to install a new Operating System (which may be very challenging for less tech savvy backers)

Please consider this idea as I think it would make Open_Slate something very uniquely special in the market and help with the adoption of BraxOS for android apps whilst catering to the ever growing Linux user base.

If other backers like this idea, please click the  heart icon to help provide feedback to the Brax team.

I really like this idea! :+1:

Wonderful news about the pen tip and battery being replaceable. As for the charger, thank you and I hope the specs will be something I already have (such as 48w PD 3.0). But if not as long as I know ahead of time to get one before the slate arrives is fine.

Suggestion: perhaps have a option to add a adapter to our orders when it is finalized?

I would also like to add my voice to: the ability to have Linux with a good emulator installed out of the box. As long as there isn’t a slow down issue, this would be much better than dual boot in my opinion. Although I suspect if you are playing high-end Android games, it may have a speed issue and require dual boot. But for most use cases the emulator should be enough.

@Dmp169

As per the stats up top it does have GPS and will have a kill switch if you want to turn it off.

Like the idea too!

Just a thought with the current situation of age verification/digital ID being forced on the OS. Will the proposed Linux OS use systemd or sysvinit/openRC?

That would decide on which Linux you install right ?.

I know they said Ubuntu and I think Yachta or something like that. Not sure what those use.
