Has anyone had issues with saving or downloading files sent via SMS? I’ve never encountered a smartphone that couldn’t download an attached messenger photo, video, etc… until the Brax3 arrived a few days ago. The messenger app gives me the option to share files received from others, but not save them. The app is set to “No permissions denied.” I haven’t seen this issue mentioned, so either I’ve missed something or this phone has a bug. I would be grateful for some help. Thanks in advance!
Can you elaborate on the types of files you have issues with? The Share sheet or link would be the way to do it. So, I tried on a picture txt to me. I can share to many other apps. But I don’t see Gallery or Files on that list at all, which is odd. In e/os, they have a Save to Gallery option.
So I loaded Fossify Files, and that shows up in the share sheet. Odd!?!
Why does Iode not share to it’s own internal apps? Good question.
Workaround… Try this… go into FDroid and install Fossify File Manager. It will let you save to the file system… but Iode should fix that. SaveTo from FDroid will also work. I just tried it also.
Since I set up the new phone, I’ve received photos (jpg) as a part of text messages. Only the “share” icon is visible. Never heard of Fossify, but I’ll look into it. Thanks.
I think there is a bug / missing feature here with the default file manager, it should show. Note if you have a message that is only a file (no text as well), when you long-press it you get the option to save to the filesystem (disk icon will show in the top bar). It is just when you “quick tap” the file that it brings it up with the share button at the bottom (and no chance to tap 3 dots and show “Save as” which I think it should be doing)?
FYI, the default messages app is “Fossify Messages” so you do know Fossify already, just not all their software
But as noted if you add “Fossify Files” it will be shown as a share target. Thanks @xancudo for the advice.
Issue created on the iodé issue tracker (readable for all, but only iodé team members have the ability to create accounts there at this time).
Hi,
Yes; I’m also experiencing a problem with downloading from received messages. I just received my phone and have been using it for about 3 or 4 days. Yesterday, a couple of friends sent me pictures of my daughter via text message. There was no possible way to download them, but I was able to screenshot them & save them that way.
Like you, I’m hoping for a solution.
I didn’t know that the text message app on the Brax3 was written by a company called Fossify. I appreciate the “heads up” about that. When you wrote that if I “add Fossify Files…” were you referring to an app called Fossify File Manager? Do you think this would fix the bug in the Messenger app?
I appreciate having a member of the OS team look into this. When you (hopefully) find a solution, will it be possible to download the fix?
Yes, if you install Fossify File Manager from the FDroid store, when you share from the Messages app, it should see the File Manager. That will allow you to save the file to your storage.
@rik has opened a bug report on Iode Gitlab for this issue.
Installed Fossify File Manager, now I can save sms messages to my file manager, thanks for that
I downloaded the Fossify File Manager, so now my Brax3 has two file manager apps, but nothing has changed. When I tap a photo that’s been sent via SMS/MMS messenger, it still only shows the “share” button. When I tap the three dots in the upper right hand corner, it shows “Use as” and “Information” as before. Any suggestions? Do you know if anyone on the development team is looking into this issue? Thanks!
Iodé and the Brax3 team have no control over the Fossify Messenger. You would need to ask the Fossify developer team.
Another option is to use a different SMS messenger app
I have the same setup. Fossify messages and file manager. In messages, long press on the image/file you want to save. then above right…click on the three dots and it should drop down with one of the choices being “Save as”. Click that and it should then take you into your brax file system where you can choose a folder to save, create new folder etc. also if you have an sd card installed, above on the left
hand side is an icon. click on that and it will switch from “Brax” to SD card. then proceed with the folder stuff.
I have seen this on occasion. I would first open, and ensure Fossify has the required permissions set. Then reboot the device just to see it it works after that. I experienced this once, and that is how I resolved it.
Correct, but after tapping share, I think that Fossify Messages should now appear as target. The “bug” (at least one of them) is that the default AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Messages app does not get registered as a sharing target.
Right, when you tap the share icon, the Fossify Messages appears as File Manager , Save As.
Today, when I tap a photo, with or with out message, the photo comes up by itself, underneath the photo is the share icon, tap it, choose “File Manager, Save As”, a folder selection should pop up, that’s the Fossify File Manager app.
Thank you! That actually worked! The original file name is gone, replaced by a three digit number that I assume the app is generating, but I can save files now, so I appreciate the help. Hopefully at some point in the future the programmers at Fossify will find a way to resolve this long-term. Thank you to everyone who gave input.
Hi.
Another option would be to download the app called Save Locally from F-Droid. It will let you choose where to download the photo/file to.
Click on photo >Click share button>Click Save Locally > Select folder
