I watched Rob’s new video in which he mentioned that Youtube works on iodeOS. That’s not what I experienced when I installed it. I first installed it on my Samsung, then made an APK from that copy, then copied the APK to my Linux machine and finally used ADB to install the APK on the Brax3. When I ran the Youtube app on the Brax3, it didn’t crash but it did give me an error about not being able to talk to a Google server. It then failed to let me search or watch any videos. So I wonder what modifications the stores e.g. Aurora or APKPure have made to make their copies work. Does anyone here know? @plamen
The Youtube app from Google won’t work on the BraX3. Some versions might, but it is bound to break on any new version.
I recommend that you use the open-sourced NewPipe (available via f-droid). NewPipe is a private frontend for Youtube - you’re able to watch youtube videos without authenticating with youtube. I suggest you give it a shot.
Some users also use grayjay app available in Aurora app store. It also allows you to watch content from Youtube.
I am in the US. And Newpipe is one that will no longer work without vpn set to appropriate country. @plamen
Welp…the front end apps were working but no longer. Had Duckduckgo working with its embedded player working for about an hour. No longer. Asking now for sign in to prove im not a bot. Seems yt is really locking it down. Will try some other countries and report back.
Hi there, I’m using NewPipe to watch youtube here at home. I’m in Puerto Rico and I also use a vpn, so far I can use any location other then my own and NewPipe works find.
That is my experience so far, also my vpn service is expressvpn.
Will retry in a bit …very well could be on my end. Very glad you have a solution that works.
Well I just tested my version of YT and it still works. Found it has an update. Guess I won’t do that for now.
Well, accidentally hit the archive button trying find the build number. Ended up unarchiving and getting the update still working though. For now.
Here is what I found…kind of a mix. I believe that some of what was happening was on my end in that I was in a building that had cell repeaters and this was causing a bit of latency. I think [cannot verify] that some of my querries through the apps were delayed enough that a timeout was logged causing an error. Some of the other issues were to api not playing nice with my vpn. Also, It looks like Youtube is testing ts new age verification [AI based] that is set to roll out next week. [this is based on reports from various creators havingsome major hiccups in uploading/getting content cleared for posting.] I retested all the different apps this mornig and all were working fine with the exception in all f them that if the vid has been flagged as not appropriate for under 18 that even n the front end apps the vids will not load/play and a dispay shows that an account login is required. The same result with Freetube on desktop at home.
It appears that it is possible that yt will eventually require the age verification/login for all content. if this happens then it may be that we will no longer be able to anonymously watch any yt until a work around is found. Just my guess.
Age verification is just identity verification in disguise. They don’t want to “protect the children”, they want to attack our privacy.
YouTube app version v20.32.41 from Aurora Store, on my Brax3 works not logged in. Shows me a few ads then lets me watch a video.
Yes, NewPipe is another great alternative.
I watch yt on brave or in new pipe. So far working well. i use a vpn
I wondering if NewPipe is having any issues these days, what with the Google demand for age verification. Just today Google said they wanted to see my ID or a credit card. Which obviously I won’t do.
Regarding age verification, Naomi Brockwell posted a good monologue about it today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DwOQwRn8_Y She says Reddit and Discord are about to demand IDs too.
yeah, GrayJay (I get it from F-Droid & Futo Repo) sometimes works for me. Just now worked on my BraX3, but didn’t yesterday on the desktop.

Oddly enough - and slightly off topic - I’m on the verge of ditching my existing logons for these…
I just downloaded NewPipe. As before, it can’t play any videos. Is there some configuration that needs to be done?
I don’t see GrayJay in fdroid.
I just downloaded Brave and opened YT. It wants me to login. I’m using BraxVPN, South2 No Ads. Wonder if a different VPN location works.
Best version of Grayjay is direct from their site. Grayjay. app
I heard a rumor from a reliable source that the desktop-based Youtube downloader program youtube-dl has become unusable and that the newer yt-dlp is struggling as well. These are coded in Python and I don’t have Python installed though so I can’t verify.
