Daniel, this is an unusual problem which likely stems from the OS Iode and/or Android 15, and not the phone hardware itself. I have tried about ten different Wi-Fi sources and eight of them work with the phone, just two of them don’t. So while it’s annoying, it’s not a deal breaker. You may have to purchase more data while the problem is being worked on. Keep in mind that IodeOS is not the only option for people, they can change to Ubuntu Touch (available soon I hope?) or some others that work with degoogled phones.
Your old phone will still work with your Wi-Fi so you can always use that for anything on the internet (without a SIM) and keep the Brax3 for calls/texts (with SIM installed).
I say IodeOS and/or Android 15 because Android users have also reported Wi-Fi problems, even in previous versions. This is why Iode team is being meticulous in gathering info about which routers people are using in a pretty large chart. Some routers work with the Brax3, and others do not. (Again, it appears most do.)
Can you send us a list of WiFI routers or WAP ( manufacturer and model or part numbers) that have been tested as working with the BRAX 3? It might be more efficient to just to add an additional router in WAP mode for a good BRAX connection. I keep my unused Wifi routers and configure them so I can use them as “free” Wireless Access Points. I have several different WANS like this and have good high speed coverage without having to go to an RF MESH network which may contain lower node speeds.
@rik You guys have been leaving us all hanging. I really don’t want to seek a refund but you guys aren’t giving any reason to remain patient. It’s sad to look at my brax3 on my desk which now is literally covered in dust.
I use my Pixel with GrapheneOS to take photos of my dogs. I keep my older phones as a testament to my ignorance, stupidity and my search for happiness. We all want to buy that thing that we know will not make us happy. Our happiness comes from anticipating that thing and buying that thing we think will solve our happiness problems. look around your residence. Do you see anything that you do not use or does not work? Be creative with your ideas. I found an old Play Station that could amuse my dogs.
Welcome to the community! We are here for the common goal seeking a little bit of Privacy that we lose via electronic gadgets that we really do not need.
Rob responded to me on brax.me about this problem so I’ll share what he said there. These are multiple exact quotes strung together…
And as I already stated it is an IODE bug. We know how to fix it, but it means that iODE has to be dumped. BraxOS works fine. The dilemma is how long do we wait until we say we dump iODE? Which is a different company.
We can’t just override the OS unless iODE is involved or every single phone is returned to us and we reflash the entire thing with BraXOS. In order to do an easier OTA update, it means iODE has to release their “signing key” to us so we take over the OS. OTA updates are the only practical solution.
So there’s a solution, but negotiations are underway. iODE wants time to fix it. Not sure if they can or not to be honest.
The specific cause of the problem is in the LineageOS layer and as I mentioned before, it is undocumented. So something is interfering at that layer with the standard operation of the device drivers. BraxOS does not have any other “layers”, and we can resolve problems directly with the SOC maker.
If we had to take over with BraxOS, we estimate about a week or so to ramp up an OTA with an OS that looks similar to iODE. I’m awaiting to hear a resolution this week.
However, it is safe to say that BraxOS is working fine. In a worse case scenario, those with tech skills could flash BraxOS directly and just override iODE. This would not require any OTA negotiations.
In case I’m not entirely clear here, iODE has a contractual obligation to fix the problem. So it’s not just a matter of third party entity free to do as they want.
Now we know this. It is just like Windows locked to motherboards with Secure Boot. Like Windows needs that to stop rootkits and malware. Windows is malware.
I also agree. I have a few dozen smartphones that I no longer use. I also know that each one of them was supposed to be “the best” selection for privacy. Check out the history of these “privacy” phones. Nextel phones ( TDMA) with IDEN and PTT functions, Motorola i1000, Motorola i700plus, iDEN i90c, Cryptophone, Symbian based phones, Blackphone, Blackphone 2, Librem 5, Necuno, Blackberry, Bittium 2C, Privy 2.0, SKY ECC, Murena One, Galaxy S24 Ultra, iPhone 17 Pro Max with EMTE, Pinephones, Gionee M6, Taigaphone, AYYA T1, Atlas M-6635, R- BACKGROUND (ROSA mobile OS) , Mizar, Alcor, R570E, Yoyaphone
Blackberry claims to care about privacy and security, and then says this:
“BlackBerry collaborates with G7 governments and major global banks, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted provider of secure communication solutions.”
The latest iPhone “Pro” model implies as much. How about the Russian Yotaphone?
Or is it like the USA YODAphone? The FBI used to use Nextel phones with Push To Talk.
