Step-by-step guide for Windows (32-bit & 64-bit)

  1. Install MediaTek USB driver. Download the latest version from this link. You can skip this if you already have it installed.

  2. Download the AP-DB Base for BraX3 from the attachment shared here.
    BraX3 AP-DB.rar (7.8 MB)

  3. Download and Install MediaTek SN Writer tool. Download from this link.

  4. Open “SN_Writer.exe”, located in the newly extracted folder, to launch the tool.

  5. Once the tool is launched, you will see the following screen:

  6. Click on the “ComPort” dropdown menu and select the “USB VCOM” option.

  7. Click on the “Target Type” dropdown menu and select the “Smart Phone” option.

  8. Click on the “System Config” button.

  9. Once the “System Config” dialog box is launched, tick the “IMEI” checkbox in the “Write Option” section. Also, tick the “IMEI CheckSum” and “Dual IMEI” checkboxes in the “IMEI Option” section

  10. Under the “Database File Option”, click on the “AP_DB” button and locate the AP file on your device. It’s located in the folder you downloaded following step 2. Select the file named “APDB_MT6835___W2421” and click “Open”.

  11. Under the “Database File Option”, click on the “MD1_DB” button and locate the BP file on your device. It’s located in the folder you downloaded following step 2. Select the file named “MDDB_MT6835_S00_MOLY_NR17_R1_MP3_RC_MP_V19_10_P3” and click “Open”.

  12. Click on “Save” button.

  13. Click on “Start” button.

  14. Under the “Data” section, enter the values for “IMEI_1” and “IMEI2”, then click on the “OK” button.

  15. Power off your BraX3 device. Then, connect it to the computer using a USB cable.

  16. Once the tool detects your BraX3, it will automatically write/flash the IMEI number onto your BraX3. After the IMEI writing is completed, you will see a green “PASS” message displayed on the tool.

  17. Congratulations! You have successfully changed the IMEI on your BraX3. To verify the new IMEI numbers, power on your BraX3 and see your IMEI by accessing: Settings > About phone > IMEI (sim slot 1) and IMEI (sim slot 2).

Common Issues When Flashing IMEI (and How to Fix Them)

Even with everything seemingly in place, IMEI flashing can fail due to a range of common issues. Here’s a breakdown of the most frequent problems and how to resolve them:

1. MediaTek USB Drivers Not Installed or Installed Incorrectly

Problem: The SN Writer Tool fails to detect your device because the necessary drivers are missing or improperly installed.

Fix:

  • Install the MediaTek USB driver, as described in step 1.
  • After installation, restart your PC.
  • Confirm installation via Device Manager – your device should appear when connected in Meta Mode.

2. Incorrect Database Files (AP DB and MD DB)

Problem: SN Writer requires specific database files to interface with the device. Using mismatched files will cause flashing to fail.

Fix:

  • Use the exact database files that correspond to the BraX3 device as described in step 10 and step 11.

3. Device Not Detected (Meta Mode Issues)

Problem: SN Writer cannot detect the device because it’s not properly entering Meta Mode (look for “META MODE” message at the bottom left of your display after connecting your phone).

Fix:

  • Make sure your device is Powered off before connecting it.
  • Make sure you pressed “Start” (see step 13) before you connected the device.
  • If Meta Mode fails to trigger, try holding Volume Down or Up while connecting.

4. Invalid IMEI Format

Problem: Entering an incorrectly formatted IMEI number will lead to an immediate failure.

Fix:

  • Ensure the IMEI is exactly 15 digits long, with no letters, symbols, or spaces.
  • Make sure that IMEI 1 is different than IMEI 2.

5. SN Writer Tool Errors (e.g., “Target not detected”, “IMEI write fail”)

Problem: These generic errors can stem from a range of causes.

Fix:

  • Reinstall drivers and try a different USB port or cable.
  • Double-check that your database files are valid.
  • Try running the tool on a different PC if persistent.
  • Make sure you’re running SN Writer Tool with administrator privileges (right click on the SNWriter.exe and choose “Run as Administrator”.

7. Faulty USB Cable or Port

Problem: Unstable USB connection can interrupt the IMEI writing process or prevent detection altogether.

Fix:

  • Use a high-quality USB cable (preferably the original).
  • Avoid USB hubs; connect directly to your PC’s USB 2.0/3.0 port.

Hi Plamen, Do you have instruction to do this with a Linux OS/Ubuntu? I do not run windows and need to change the IMEI when I get my Brax3.

This is a really nice guide, we should start a tracker for requested and in progress documentation.

No official guide yet. We’re looking into it.

That’s a good idea. I guess for now just open a new post with a request for documentation.

@plamen I saw another reference that this is not working under iodéOS, has anyone actually successfully reset IMEI?

My situation: in trying different test builds, etc. with SPFlash, I accidentally wiped my IMEI. I have them listed in a text file. When using the tool (W10 64bit, firewall disabled, newest driver installed - I even installed W10 on a spare laptop just for this :-), I do the following:

  • Start the Tool V1.2463.0.0 (as listed from “Help > About”
  • Set settings as described.
  • Click start, entering IMEI 1 and 2, and “OK”
  • Output: it says “Start searching preloader com port and handshake…”
  • Plug in powered-off phone, it does detect and display “META MODE” at bottom for a second
  • Output: it says “Start searching kernel com port and handshake…” and just stays there. No more progress.
  • After another minute or so, it goes back to the IMEI entry window (both are empty). No “FAIL”, no nothing. Just sort of “gets stuck”.
  • I found in the logs, C:\SN Writer\, this message:
ERROR: SP_BROM::SP_GetUSBCOMPortWithFIlter(): enum kernel comport fail(1042). (SPexc.cpp:1060)

Possibilities / Questions:

  • The link to the specific SN Writer tool download doesn’t work for me. I just got the “newest version”, V1.2463.0.0 (as listed from “Help > About”
  • Should be bootloader be unlocked? I have tried both ways, I think the same errors :frowning:
  • Other ideas?

Yes, not working currently. Need to flash to LunarOS > Change IMEI > Flash back to iodeOS. We have someone working on fixing it. Hopefully will be working soon.

@plamen - thank you, I have been banging my head on this from all sorts of angles (winxp / w10 / etc). I didn’t realize the installed system would come into play, I thought this was sort of “below” whether I had iodéOS / LunarOS / or simply “no OS”.

I would like to test wifi on LunarOS so this will be a good excuse. Can you point me to the builds, the guide doesn’t seem to have any download links.

@brinerustle was able to provide a download of LunarOS. I was able to install it, then was able to successfully flash my IMEI back to the phone. Now back on iodéOS again with IMEI in place!

@plamen I know you are busy but I would recommend giving a big warning on the SP Flash guide on the how to upgrade your brax3 post to NOT use the “Format ALL + Download” if you are installing / updating iodéOS since it isn’t possible to re-insert your IMEI afterward.

Fair point. I clarified it in the documentation.

Here is a download link for LunarOS. @plamen if you have a more official hosting location for it feel free!

Additionally, @plamen the link above for SN Writer download isn’t working, here is were I got it (just took the most recent one): https://snwritetool.com/

After flashing Lunar OS from your download link onto a Brax3 I get a constant red text in the upper left hand of the screen saying “userdebug”. It’s kind of annoying, I guess it’s a debug version of LunarOS?
BTW in LunarOS I was successful in changing the IMEIs.

Yes so it seems (that is all I could source from the team to try)

Great! I know at least one other person (@Ricmar ) that is trying this and having trouble with the setup environment.

Can you comment on replaced IMEIs, did you change so you could attempt to get on the Verizon network (USA) by chance? That is a goal for this other user.

How can I get their official release when it comes out? Do I have to subscribe somewhere?

What I would do is find a google pixel, write down the IMEI, change the second to last number of the IMEI, then use an IMEI calculator to calculate the check number (very last number of the IMEI) and use that to flash onto the BraX3.
Maybe check that Verizon was working on the google pixel first. Basically you just have to find an IMEI number that was working with Verizon and use that.

I have the same “userdebug”. I have been using Verizon on my GOS Pixel. I intend to use that SIM. Both pixel IMEI’s are written down. I just need to get the missing vcruntime140.dll file so SN Writer will work.
s25712308, did you have any issues with that? I’m using Win10 64bit.

Did you also write down your original brax3 IMEIs in case you need to go back?

OK sorry, I did forget I needed to get the vcruntime.dll too!

Don’t you just love Windows?

I do have the original BraX3 IMEI but don’t think I will be going back.

I didn’t have any issues installing the SN Writer from the link above on Windows 11. I think I even installed it on Windows 10 before.

Nooooo I don’t love Windows. Yes, original BraX3 IMEI’s are also written down. Also took pictures of them and the pixel IMEI’s.

So it’s this pc. It said when I got it, there were no updates available as I did setup. Oh, yes, and then there’s the strange switching of the Ctrl, Fn keys on the keyboard of the Lenovo ThinkPad I got, why on earth did they do that!!! My fingers don’t work well on that layout for copy paste :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
