Carplay not working

From the conversations on the forum they say to activate android auto but asking me to download all these google apps, which is not possible. I just want to plug in my phone and for the waze app to come up on my car screen. The other issues is I cant switch control from ‘this device’ to the external one that is the car, just wont switch. I also tried downloading a bunch of carplay apps from the store and so far not yielding results. I would appreciate any guidance on how to get my phone waze app…
