Crashing apps and restarts

I’d like to stop using my old de-Googled Pixel 7 with CalyxOS in favor of my new BraX3, but I can’t yet due to stability issues. Apps crash constantly, including several that are critical for basic messaging and productivity (Signal, MySudo, Proton, etc.), and the phone pretty frequently crashes entirely and drops to an iodéOS splash screen or fully restarts. So far I haven’t noticed any kind of pattern to any of this, other than it’s fairly constant, so unfortunately my BraX3 is currently unusable as a primary phone or only phone. Really want it to be though, so I’m hoping to find a fix!

I hope you find a solution soon. I don’t have any issues with the new amazing Brax3 phones designed with Privacy and user in mind! Why? I have not received them yet, so they are in a pristine working condition at this time.

Definitely sounds buggy - it could be a hardware fault hence the random nature… Hopefully something someone like @rik or @plamen can help you with (at least a little) - maybe there is some sort of log you can view (realtively easily) to see what event happened that triggered the crash or reboot and they can explain how? So you can see if its actually a common cause you can’t intuit from when they occur while using the device…

@k187u I second what @Mycenius is saying. While most of the Brax3 devices are fine, some have been known to have hardware issues. Contact @rik and @plamen directly. They might have additional questions for you to figure out if it is a hardware issue, and if it is, I am sure the Brax3 makers will replace your device.

I’m having the same problems. My BraX3 is unstable.

By unstable, I mean

  • spontaneous browser crashes (Brave, DuckDuckGo, and the built-in Iode browser)
  • apps simply stop (Musicolet, Pocket Cast)
  • soft reboots (goes back to the iode bootup screen) when trying to look at a photo sent to me via MMS
  • soft reboots that hang (have to power down while it’s displaying the iode bootup screen for 5+ minutes without progress) when trying to view a video sent to me via MMS
  • hard reboots (goes back to the brax bootup screen)
  • I don’t know for sure, but none of this seemed to happen before I applied the latest OS update. I’m now running iodeOS version 6.7-20250830-brax3

Questions:

  1. Has anyone else had problems subsequent to updating the OS to the version above?
  2. Is there a way to revert to the previous OS version, since I didn’t have any of these problems prior to updating?

@mark17 I have never used 6.7-20250830-brax3, but I suspect that was a beta version of 6.7. The officially available iodeOS versions for Brax3 can be found here:
https://gitlab.iode.tech/ota/release/-/tree/master/brax3

My Brax3 originally came with v6.3-20250528, but I am now on v6.6-20250803. It looks like they removed v6.3 from the official Brax3 repository since then. I don’t know why.

If you want to revert to a previous (or any other OS, even non-Iode OS that Brax3 might support in the future), you can use the instructions at the following link. Be warned, though, that all your data on the phone will be erased. You will need to back it up. Note that some apps may not be able to be backed up, and you’ll need to reinstall them manually afterward.

Also, there are two methods they mention for manual upgrade. The spflash method is easier, in my opinion, but your only OS version choice for using the spflash method at the moment seems to be iode-6.6-20250803-brax3-spflash.zip

Thanks so much! I’ll give that a try.

@k187u – with which OS version were you having your difficulties?

Thanks for the help, all! The phone is stuck on version 6.3 because the updater always fails. I haven’t yet tried the direct download link provided in this thread, but I will soon.

Incidentally, I had the foresight to buy two BraX3 phones, one for me and one for my son. I was holding off on giving my son his new phone until I’ve had a chance to test mine, and so I’ve decided to just switch phones to see if maybe mine has a hardware issue or something. I have installed all my apps and stuff on the other phone, and so far so good! It’s also running 6.3.

Yeah, probably want to fix that first before worrying about anything else, might be the OS is behind the app versions so creating an error…

Be interesting to hear how you get on both with the alternate 6.3 phone, and if you can get your current unit from 6.3 up to the latest stable version and whether the issue goes away?

My brax3 is saying it corrupted and not staying on. I only use that phone for a few days before it started to give problem and not turning on. Now it not coming back on. I was told it would be replaced. Not sure when. I am now back to the old android with the damn wifi scanning that i was running from.

Yeah that’s an unrelated issue and definitely a hardware replacement thing. If you have had support say it’s being replaced it’s probably just waiting to ship due to the logistics delays… if it’s been a while might be worth emailing them again for an update?

@rik and @plamen, can one of you DM me please? I can’t find any controls for sending a DM, perhaps because I’m still new to the forum and don’t have access to do that yet. Thanks!

Just an update that my second BraX3 phone is now running 6.7 with no issues, while the first BraX3 phone continues to crash, and all attempts to update from 6.3 fail.

Just tap or click on the person’s name in any post or similar (like the tag you put in your message above) and choose “message”.

Assume that includes the full reset and reinstall attempt on the first phone? That might be starting sound suspiciously like a hardware fault if that’s the case - if not you might have to resort to that?

Thanks, however I don’t see a message button when I tap/click on usernames. Presumably because I’m new to the community? Sorry if I’m missing something obvious!

I just did a factory reset on my wonky BraX3 phone and immediately attempted to update iodéOS from the default 6.3 to 6.7 without doing anything else. The process failed due to the phone crashing and restarting during the download process. Definitely seems to be a hardware issue! My other BraX3 is still working fine, with just a few minor hiccups.

Yeah looks like you are right - you have not been here long enough to do DM’s - need to like a few more posts an maybe comment on a few (not sure how many it needs to be - maybe 5?) - FYI this is what you should see once you have the trust level:

P.S. If either of them don’t contact you in the next 36 hours or so just reply here and tag me and I will send them a DM on your behalf to reach out to you.
